ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – A new house is officially on the market in Escanaba, and it was constructed by local high schoolers.
Last fall, students from the Delta Schoolcraft Intermediate School District (ISD) started building a house on the 800 block of Willow Creek Road. On Friday, they hosted its first open house.
The home is a partnership between the ISD’s Building Trades program and InvestUP’s Build U.P. initiative, which provided funding for the project. The goal is to meet housing needs in the community by providing an affordable option for local families, while giving students hands-on experience to prepare them for the future.
‘We haven’t done it in 20-plus years, and we thought that it’d be good to bring it back to the community,” said ISD Building Trades Instructor Steve Menard. “They learn everything from masonry to electrical, plumbing, mechanical, framing, roofing, siding. Pretty much every part of it, they’ve had a hand in it.”
Another open house is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Anyone interested in the house is asked to call (906) 280-0085.
Students have already started building a second affordable home next door. To learn more about the Delta Schoolcraft ISD’s housing project, click here.
