MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A 39-year-old man from Manistique has been found dead. The police search was the cause of a temporary closure of the Manistique East Breakwater Lighthouse and nearby areas on Wednesday, May 27.
On Tuesday, May 26, an individual called the Michigan State Police (MSP) Manistique Outpost, asking troopers to open a missing person investigation. There were no apparent signs of suspicious circumstances, and it was unclear where the 39-year-old man may have gone or why he was missing. Troopers attempted to locate the man but were initially unsuccessful.
The next day, troopers located items belonging to the man while searching the area around the East Breakwater Lighthouse and the nearby park. The MSP Marine Services Team was then called in. Late into the night, divers found the man’s body in the water.
Although the preliminary investigation indicates no signs of foul play, the investigation is ongoing. The lighthouse and park areas have been reopened. The man’s next of kin was notified.
MSP Manistique troopers were assisted by the MSP Marine Services Team, the Manistique Public Safety Department, the MSP Eighth District Detective Bureau, and the MSP Negaunee Regional Communications Center.
