MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The 39th annual Petunia Pandemonium returns next weekend to kick off the summer with a patriotic twist.
Around each first week of June, the Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee teams up with Nagelkirk Gardens to line the southern entrance of the City of Marquette with thousands of colorful flowers.
“We have about 20 different kinds of flowers we plant every year,” said Committee Vice President and Petunia Pandemonium Chairperson, Barb Kelly. “I’m pretty excited to see how it all looks once we get them in the ground.”
This year, as a special anniversary for the United States, Petunia Pandemonium will feature reds, whites, and blues, including some that have never been used in past events.
The garden says the tradition has become a perfected first impression of newcomers to the area.
“It’s really an honor to be a part of something so nice, it really makes the community pop when you come into town,” said Nagelkirk Greenhouse Manager, Fred Hahn. “When you first drive into Marquette, if you’ve never been here before, it’s actually quite stunning.”
Hundreds of Bothwell Middle School students will plant the flowers on the east side of US-41 South on the morning of Friday, May 29th. Other community volunteers will plant the west side on Saturday, May 30th. More information can be found here.
