ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Friday, people across the Upper Peninsula participated in a national day of action known as May Day.
Many organizations held demonstrations calling on legislators to support working families over billionaires through living wages, affordable healthcare, and affordable housing. In Ecanaba, Delta County Unified opted to host an ice cream social.
“Some of the messaging is not unifying, and it doesn’t always bring everybody together as a community,” Delta County Unified President Leah Belanger said. “It alienates certain groups. My goal was to find an activity that would actually unite everybody.”
“And who doesn’t want to unite for ice cream?” laughed member Naomi Green.
Delta County Unified members handed out cookies, muffins, and other snacks while informing community members about the group and voter registration. Attendees could also sign a petition in support of Michiganders for Money Out of Politics, a ballot initiative to limit campaign donations from certain large corporations.
“The goal is for our elected officials to work for us instead of the wealthy billionaires and PACs,” Belanger said.
Delta County Unified is a local branch of the national Indivisible movement.
