ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Some Delta County scout troops celebrated Arbor Day by making Escanaba a bit greener.
Scouts of varying ages helped the Department of Public Works plant three new trees—an American Sentry Linden, a Greenspire Linden, and a bur oak—in Ludington Park. They each picked up a shovel, placed their tree in the ground, and secured it so that it will grow strong and healthy.
Scouts received a new badge for their efforts. However, they said the best reward is knowing they have done their part to beautify the city and help the planet.
“It gives back to Mother Nature, because we take so many trees each year,” said Olivia of Scout Troop 5067.
“It helps the environment and gives animals a place to live,” said fellow 5067 scout Brynlee.
Escanaba has been a member of the Tree City USA network for 26 years. As part of that membership, the City commits to hosting a public tree planting each year. For more information on Tree City USA, visit arborday.org.
