MARQUETTE COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – Marquette County’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) continues to monitor the aftermath of the March 15-16 blizzard that has quickly made snowfall history in the area.
After Monday, National Weather Service Marquette recorded a new local 2-day snowfall record of 36.3 inches, beating the previous record of 31.9 inches set in March of 1997.
At a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Marquette County Undersheriff Lowell Larson reminded the public to properly clear ventilation for gas burning appliances, safely use generators, and keep roofs clear. Localized flooding has also been a closely monitored concern around the county, as Larson noted two reports already made over Monday and Tuesday.
“This all has to melt, there is a tremendous amount of water volume captured within that snow,” he said. “The EOC is working with the NWS and other partners to predict and respond to the potential flooding from this extreme amount of snow.”
Larson also mentioned that the MQT Sawyer Regional Airport remains closed while crews plow parking and terminal access.
As residents and businesses work their hardest to alleviate the feet of snow following the blizzard, Marquette County’s Emergency Operations Center is working around the clock to provide its communities with resources. Those needs can be directed by dialing 2-1-1.
