ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The City of Escanaba is warning residents about a phone scam involving individuals falsely claiming to represent utility companies.
Several residents have reported receiving calls from “Escanaba UPPCO” demanding immediate payment by calling a specified number. The City of Escanaba and the Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) have both confirmed the calls to be fraudulent. Neither the Escanaba Utility Department nor UPPCO will require immediate payment over the phone to prevent disconnections.
Citizens who believe they have received a scam call are advised to hang up and call their service provider directly. UPPCO customer service can be reached at (906) 449-2013, and the City of Escanaba Utility Department can be reached at (906) 786-0552.
