WATERSMEET, Mich. (WZMQ) – Watersmeet schools held a teachers’ summit today to gauge the progress of their new curriculum.
After 4 years of re-thinking its entire program, Watersmeet Schools is now recognized as a leader in culturally inclusive education.
Back in 2022, leaders at Watersmeet Township School District began a new approach in how they teach their students.
Faced with significant truency issues, behavioral problems, and low test scores, Watersmeet began an initiative that integrates indigenous culture into all areas of study, making lessons more meaningful and relevant for not only native students but for all students. Educators say the results have been significant.
“The kids are starting to feel like they have a place at the table. I think a lot of kids are asking for responsibility. They are asking for acceptance and to be heard,” said 6th-grade teacher Brett Figler.
Watersmeet school officials believe strong community support, especially from parents, is a major reason for their success
