MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Team Michigan leaders gathered in downtown Marquette this afternoon for a winter-themed “Snow Breaking” ceremony.
The event marked the start of a new mixed-used development at 401 West Washington Street. The four-story project will add 11 residential units, two commercial spaces, and indoor parking as part of a broader effort to strengthen density and support local businesses.
Backed by a 1.5 million dollar RAP grant through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the project aims to address a growing housing shortage across the Upper Peninsula.
“We definitely have a great need for housing across the U.P.,” says Marquette DDA Executive Director Taralaase Mckinney. “Anytime we can add any housing units is great. We need 900 units a year, we’re clearly not hitting that goal, but any that we can add to chip away at those numbers is a great benefit.”
Leaders say additions like this help move the region closer to fulfilling long-term community goals.
