Standfest leads Huskies with 15 points

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team dropped a road contest to Davenport, 63-51, for a series split at the Davenport Student Center on Thursday.

Kendall Standfest led the team with 15 points and six rebounds as Alyssa Wypych also reached double-figure scoring with 13 points. Soraya Timms had a team-high five assists and made three 3-pointers

“Credit to Davenport, they came out ready to play,” said Tech head coach Sam Clayton. “I thought our energy was low from the start, but there’s no excuse. We’ve got to find ways to be creative and get to the rim when our shot isn’t falling.”

Michigan Tech (12-7, 6-5 GLIAC)  forced four turnovers in the first quarter but trailed early on after shooting 15.8% from the field, while Davenport (6-13, 4-7 GLIAC) hit two 3-pointers in the period to take a 12-7 advantage.

Standfest went 3-4 from the field in the second quarter to account for nine of the team’s 17 points—shooting 58.3 percent in the second quarter, although the Huskies still trailed by six, as the Panthers shot 50 percent from the field and knocked down three 3-pointers to enter halftime ahead 30-26.

Timms hit her first shot of the day in the third quarter, with a 3-pointer, which made it a three-point game. However, the Panthers got an old-fashioned three-point play by Maddie Geers before Anna Axtell connected from beyond the arc to get ahead by nine and ultimately head into the fourth quarter leading 44-37.

Standfest hit two 3-pointers in the quarter to lead the way, as the team shot 5-18 in the third.

After not leading by more than nine points in the contest, the Panthers got double-digit separation, holding a 13-point edge twice in the final quarter.

The Huskies went on a 7-0 run with two buckets by Wypych and a 3-pointer by Timms with 4:01 to play. Although the Panthers ultimately pulled away, with a trey by Tangee Gagau, making it a nine-point game with 2:49 remaining.

Timms hit her second 3-pointer of the quarter to cut the lead to eight points, but a turnover by the Huskies and a fastbreak layup by Gagau put the game out of reach, as Ellie Toney hit two free throws with 37 seconds to play to decide the contest at 63-51.

Toney led the Panthers with 19 points and a team-high three 3-pointers to go with eight rebounds and two assists. Gagua finished with 14 points on 5-8 from the field and seven rebounds. Geers neared a double-double with 12 points and a team-high nine boards.
