Wildcats finish conference season in third place
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women’s wrestling team completed its Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) duals on Saturday, earning a split.
The Wildcats knocked off Quincy 26-21, then fell to host Grand Valley State 35-11. With the split, Northern finished the conference with a 3-2 (.600) record for a third-place finish in the conference behind McKendree (5-0) and Grand Valley State (5-1).
In matches that weren’t decided by forfeit, NMU went 9-4 on the day. Sophia Bassino, Alissa Caltagirone, and Abbie Miles all went 2-0.
Northern Michigan 26, Quincy 21
The Wildcats totaled a 6-1 record vs. the Hawks in competitive matches. NMU had to forfeit at the 103, 110, and 131 weight classes to keep Quincy close, while the Hawks added a win of their own at 124.
Four of NMU’s six wins came by fall. At 117, Zhivanna Magdaleno tacked on five points for the ‘Cats with a pin at the 2:32 mark. Alissa Caltagirone added another win by fall at 145, taking 2:13 to secure her victory. At 160, Sophia Bassino carried over her success from last weekend with a win at 2:15. NMU’s fourth win by fall came from Abbie Miles at 180, and she secured her triumph in the shortest time, needing just 1:55.
Alyssa Keane won by a 12-5 decision at 138, while her sister, Mickaela Keane, also won by a 5-0 decision at 207.
Northern Michigan 11, Grand Valley State 35
Despite the loss, the Wildcats impressed against the No. 4 team in the nation. Northern gave up forfeits in four weight classes, but went 3-3 in those that had a bout.
Caltagirone picked up her second win of the day at 145, edging her opponent 11-0 for a tech fall win at 4:17. Bassino added her second victory in as many tries with a 10-4 decision at 160. At 180, Miles secured a 10-0 tech fall win at 2:30 to also move to 2-0 on the day.
The Wildcats forfeited 103, 110, 131, and 138, while the Lakers won at 117, 124, and 207.
