Michigan Tech Mind Trekkers event teaches students about STEM careers

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Wednesday, U.P. middle school students explored STEM careers with Michigan Technological University’s (MTU) Mind Trekkers program.

Michigan Tech brought its annual OneUP Hidden Coast Festival to the U.P. State Fairgrounds. Students enjoyed more than 60 science fair-style activities, from learning firsthand about chemical reactions to trying liquid nitrogen ice cream.

“Some of our biggest hitters are being inside a giant bubble, a power pole that students can climb and learn about lineman careers, and also our foam gnomes are a big hit,” said Jannah Tumey, Director of the MTU Center for Educational Outreach.

Many booths were manned by Michigan Tech students. Others were operated by local businesses, including North Country Electrical Line School, OSF Healthcare, Independent Machine Company, and VanAire.

Tumey says exposing students to potential career paths at an early age has tremendous benefits.

“It’s when they’re the most curious and when they’re the most open to trying new things and learning about new opportunities,” she said. “We want to make sure that they’re also setting themselves up for success with the classes that they take in middle and in high school to support their future career aspirations. We’re showing them how what they’re learning in the classroom is applicable in their everyday lives, and we’re giving them the opportunity to do that in a hands-on way that piques their interest.”

The event was a collaboration between Michigan Technological University, Bay College, U.P. Michigan Works!, and the Delta Schoolcraft Intermediate School District. According to U.P. Michigan Works! Business Service Manager Tonya Heikkinen, events like these show students that employers right here in the Upper Peninsula offer exciting, rewarding careers.

“Students can come out and see who exactly is in their backyard,” she said. “What do they do? What are the positions they offer? What are some of those skills that they might need? It is a great opportunity to partner with so many community organizations for these students to have a wonderful experience for the entire day.”

In a few weeks, Michigan Tech will take the Mind Trekkers program to students in Appleton, Wisconsin. To learn more about MTU Mind Trekkers, click here.
