ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) The Ishpeming Ski Club marked a major milestone Saturday night with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the U.P. Nordic Ski Complex, celebrating the 139th Annual Ski Jumping Tournament and the 100th anniversary of Suicide Ski Hill.
The ceremony came during a weekend of competition that featured young athletes vying for qualification spots at the FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships that will be taking place in Norway.
Organizers, such as board member Frida Waara, say that the ribbon cutting represents more than a ceremony – it honors generations of work behind the scenes:
“Any community in the country can hand out Gatorade and donuts or oranges for a summer Sunday and host a marathon, says Waara.” “But for one hundred and thirty-nine years of erecting the ski jump here and grooming it – you have seen what it takes to get the ski jump ready.”
The three-day long series pf wintry competition came to a close this Sunday, wrapping up another chapter in Ishpeming’s long-standing ski jumping tradition.
