Bonifas Arts Center offers full schedule of winter classes

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – This winter, the Bonifas Arts Center is offering a variety of classes for artists of all ages.

On January 28, local upcycling expert Jessica Shields will teach a course on fiber coiling. Attendees will make one-of-a-kind household items out of scrap materials and yarn. A two-session class on crocheting fingerless mitts, taught by instructor Caitlin Kirchenwitz, will begin on January 29.

Other unique offerings include a pottery class beginning February 5. Instructor Dawn Delany will teach students how to craft a gnome luminary. On February 6 and 13, Gabriel Gaudino will present “Exploration in Animation,” where he’ll walk attendees through animation history and fundamentals.

Bonifas Education Coordinator Noah Johnson says most courses are beginner-friendly. He encourages anyone interested in learning about a new medium to give one of these classes a try.

“If you’ve never done a class before or maybe you’ve never picked up a paintbrush, our instructors are wonderful at guiding new students,” said Johnson. “We want art to be a place for everybody; we want to make it accessible for everybody. Please come by! We’d love to have you.”

February will bring the return of Toddler Art, a weekly series for children up to 4 years old, as well as a weekly course for homeschoolers.

As a new addition for adult artists, on February 4, the Bonifas will present a poetry night hosted by Johnson. The event is free to attend, but donations will be accepted at the door. Johnson says writers of any experience level are welcome.

“A lot of writers out there—myself included—we kind of just journal, and we never really share those words with a lot of people,” he said. “It’ll be just a great time and a great environment for you to say those words and share your story, or whatever it may be, in a safe and comfortable space.”

To view the full schedule of winter classes or to register for one, visit bonifasarts.org. To suggest a class or to inquire about teaching a course, contact Johnson at noah@bonifasarts.org.
