NMU students prepare for final exams

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Final exams are next week for Northern Michigan University, and students are already hard at work to prepare.

Before they can head home for the month-long Christmas break, studying for finals is at the forefront of their schedules. While everyone has their own way to grasp their workloads, a few S.T.E.M. students told WZMQ 19 News they’re preparing for some of their most difficult exams yet.

“Organic chemistry is one of my biggest exams next week,” said Madison Keller, a junior studying microbiology. “It’s probably my hardest.”

“My Organic Chemistry II exam, that’s my hardest class,” said Evan Boucher, a junior studying biology with a concentration in physiology. “That’s pretty much where all my focus is going in terms of this week and next week.”

Keeping a special routine is key during each exam period, in order to stay on top of those prioritized courses.

“I kind of write a summary of all the summaries from all the different modules,” explained Keller. “It’s easier to learn in your own words, rather than just learning in the words of either a textbook or even sometimes the professor.”

Aside from studying habits, these routines can also mean maintaining a social battery or even deciding whether or not to sleep at night.

“So far, I’ve pulled one all-nighter,” said Keller.

“I’ve been getting as much sleep as possible and studying during the day,” said Boucher.

“I’m kind of prioritizing having the balance, so I’m not in my room all the time,” said Riley Goodson, a freshman studying psychology. “Also going to hang out my friends, so I’m not overworked.”

The Wildcats begin their exams on Monday, December 8, before grades will be finalized on Tuesday, December 16.
