NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has recently been on a tour of community conversations, centered around the growing needs of older adults in Michigan.
On Wednesday morning in Negaunee, members of the MDHHS spoke with volunteers and staff from surrounding senior service providers, including meals on wheels drivers, the Marquette Senior Center, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), and more.
The goal of this meeting was to listen to their concerns relating to issues in funding, transportation, housing, and technology among seniors.
“I really appreciate that this meeting happened, and was hosted by people from the state, looking at issues here in the Upper Peninsula,” said Carol Steinhaus, a meals on wheels driver in Marquette County.
“There are so many things that could be solved relatively easy if we could be creative,” she continued. “If we could get good-hearted individuals here in our area to contribute a little bit of time and thought to take care of their neighbor by offering transport, helping meals on wheels, RSVP and so on, that would really be great.”
MDHHS will take this information, along with a well-rounded survey into account for the next State Plan on Aging for Michigan, to be set in place by October 2027. Click here to complete the full survey.
