Calumet’s Torola leads Huskies with 18 kills
HAMMOND, Ind. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team fell 3-1 at Purdue Northwest on Sunday in the only meeting with the Pride this season. The home team won 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, and 25-22.
The match had 27 ties and 16 lead changes. The Pride overcame 11 lead changes in the first set and scored the final nine points to take the lead. The Huskies had more kills in the opening frame but also had more errors.
PNW (7-7, 4-4 GLIAC) never trailed in the second, though the Huskies kept it within a four-point margin. Madelyn Torola had eight kills in the second, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Pride’s .341 hitting percentage.
Tech got on the board in the third after 13 ties and 11 lead changes. The Huskies had a 4-0 run in crunch time, which included back-to-back kills by Jacqueline Yancy for setpoint. A serving error made it a 2-1 match. Yancy totaled five kills in the set.
The Pride finished off the match in the fourth. Jacqueline Yancy was a force again with seven kills for the Black and Gold, but too many errors by the Huskies and a balanced PNW offense gave the home team the victory.
Madelyn Torola led the Huskies with 18 kills for the second match in a row. She hit .417 with a pair of solo blocks. Jacqueline Yancy finished with 14 kills and nine digs over the final three sets. Brooke Dzwik had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Tricia Kennedy and Paige Wagner added seven kills each. Madelynn Kreider tallied 29 assists and Tess Hayes added 23 assists, and Julia Fledderjohn had 15 digs.
The Huskies wrap up non-conference play next weekend back in Hammond at the 17th annual Midwest Regional Volleyball Crossover Tournament. The Huskies will play three matches.
