ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – A competency evaluation has been ordered for the man accused of committing an arson attack on a Delta County business.
After 12:00 a.m. on September 1, Michigan State Police troopers responded to an attack at the Rapid River Pub. It was alleged that the fire had been set intentionally. Following an investigation, law enforcement arrested 33-year-old Steven Prestridge of Rapid River.
On Thursday, he appeared in court virtually from the Delta County Jail on one charge of arson – preparation to burn real property, as well as one charge of second-degree retail fraud. Defense attorney Dana Harper requested the competency exam, saying that she “had difficulty” discussing the charges and court proceedings with Prestridge.
“At times, Mr. Prestridge seemed incoherent,” Harper told the judge. “He would get off on a tangent that was unrelated. I had trouble understanding what he was speaking about. He made some nonsensical statements… I have a belief that he might not be able to aid in his defense.”
The judge granted the request, citing a “sufficient showing” that the defendant “may be incompetent to stand trial.” Prestridge must undergo his competency evaluation before the case can proceed further.
