ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – A nationally-known food artist has brought her talents back to the U.P. State Fair for another year.
All week long, Sarah “The Cheese Lady” Kaufmann has been carving a one-of-a-kind sculpture for the United Dairy Farmers of Michigan. She started with 1,600 pounds of cheese, keeping the Miracle of Life Pavilion dairy cooler at about 48 degrees while she works inside.
The design began as a sketch, gradually transforming into the image shown above. Kaufmann says cheese carving is a good arm workout, as well as a creative way to encourage fairgoers to enjoy dairy products.
“You can see my theme here is, ‘Milk Means Energy,'” she said. “I have jumping kids and jumping cows, and they’re all celebrating the good food nutrition of dairy products here in Michigan. Besides, they taste great; they’re great nutrition.”
The Cheese Lady has officially finished this year’s sculpture, which will be on display through Sunday. For the full fair schedule, click here.
