ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – UPDATE: Multiple fire and police departments responded to a fire at an Escanaba business on Wednesday.

Late in the morning, a reported explosion occurred at U.P. Towing & Recycling, located at 2311 9th Avenue North near the U.P. State Fairgrounds. Large clouds of dark smoke could be seen coming from the area. Escanaba Public Safety, the Escanaba Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Ford River Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, and other agencies quickly responded.

The property owner told WZMQ 19 he believes an employee drilled into a gas can, which he says they were told not to do. However, a press release from Escanaba Public Safety states that officers were dispatched to the scene for a report of a vehicle fire inside a structure. As firefighters were positioning their gear, they heard “numerous explosions.” The large explosions continued as suppression efforts began.

The fire was brought under control and extinguished, but the building and its contents were a total loss. The owner of a neighboring business told WZMQ 19 that firefighters were able to save her building. No injuries were reported.

INCLUDED IN ORIGINAL STORY:

According to the City of Escanaba Water Department, residents and businesses on North Lincoln Road between the fairgrounds and Ludington Street should be advised of possible dirty water due to the fire. Food service establishments are asked to refrain from using soda fountains, ice machines, coffee makers, and other water-fed beverage or food equipment until the water runs clear to avoid contamination or equipment damage.

If dirty water occurs, the department recommends running the water for five to ten minutes to clear the line. If dirty water persists, contact the Water Department at (906) 786 – 3291.
