Negaunee, Mich. (WZMQ) – As Negaunee’s Pioneer Days continue, today saw the annual Night on the Town, and the Pioneer Princess Pageant at Negaunee High School.
The pageant is open to girls in grades 1 through 5 who either live in Negaunee or go to school there. 14 girls competed for the crown, an honor that allows the winner to throw out the first pitch at next year’s softball tournament and ride with Santa Claus during the Christmas parade. Awards were given out for Miss Congeniality, as well as first runner-up. Pageant coordinator Eliisa Gladwell says pageants for younger contestants are a little different than those for teens and adults.
“But little kids’ pageants are so much harder because you can’t base them on difficult questions, you can’t base them on fitness and typical pageantry, so we’re really looking for character, charisma, and just a good attitude all around,” said pageant co-coordinator Eliisa Gladwell.
This year’s pioneer princess winner was 6-year-old Isla Taseris, who was also named Miss Congeniality.
