MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Police officers across the country are raising money for the Special Olympics, in collaboration with Dunkin’ Donuts.
The annual ‘Cop on a Rooftop’ charity event has been ongoing for 5 years, through the Law Enforcement Torch Run program. This partnership between law enforcement and Special Olympics gives public awareness and fundraising towards the Special Olympics’ year-round athletic competitions and training for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Friday morning from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m., Dunkin’ Donuts locations in Marquette, Houghton, Menominee, and Iron Mountain, had officers welcome and encourage customers to make any donation towards Special Olympics Michigan.
“It’s important, not only for the program but for the community,” said Donald Mowery, a corrections officer at the Marquette Branch Prison. “It shows the relationship that law enforcement has with this community.”
“The point of us doing this fundraising is so they can participate in those games at no cost for them or their families,” said Carl White, an executive committee member with the Torch Run program. “The Law Enforcement Torch Run covers all of those fees for the summer and winter games.”
Each store has a goal of raising at least one thousand dollars for the cause. The Marquette Dunkin’ Donuts does not have roof access, so unfortunately, no cops were on its rooftop Friday.
