NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Negaunee Public Schools Board of Education has selected current Athletic Director and Middle School Assistant Principal Andy Skewis as its next superintendent.
As a native of Negunee, Skewis says that the school’s connection throughout the community will make for a successful transition of leadership.
“I feel like the school and the community are very well connected and compliment each other,” said Skewis. “Understanding the culture and the values of the community and the school is really going to be a huge benefit.”
Skewis has worked in the district for the past 25 years. In 2000, after graduating from Northern Michigan University and coaching in Negaunee, he decided to stay in the area.
“At the high school I was an English teacher, I coached football and wrestling, then I moved over here full time four years ago,” said Skewis. “I’ve also spent time serving as Union President for our teachers association in the past, so I’ve had quite a few different hats over the years.”
Skewis says that going forward, he plans to continue the district’s strong work he’s seen over the years, while improving and growing as needed.
“I think consistency is going to be the biggest caveat moving forward, but change is nessecary,” said Skewis. “We’re not building from scratch, but we want to continue to make improvement as we see opportunities.”
Andy Skewis will begin his position later this summer, after current superintendent Dan Skewis retires.
