Shooting woes hurt MTU Women’s Basketball

Huskies just two of 20 from three-point land

DETROIT, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team sputtered on the road with foul trouble and two eight-point quarters proving too much to overcome against Wayne State, ultimately falling 66-44 at the Wayne State Fieldhouse on Thursday evening.

“Getting in foul trouble early wasn’t ideal but at the same time there were other things we could’ve done better,” said Tech head coach Sam Clayton. “We’ve got to find ways to get at the rim when the jump shots aren’t falling. I felt when we got down we stopped running our offense and it went downhill from there. In general, I thought Wayne State moved the ball well and got great looks off of ball reversals—we’ve just got to trust our offense even when we’re not shooting it well.”

Michigan Tech (9-12, 6-7 GLIAC) got in a bit of foul trouble in the opening half as five players had two fouls respectively, never allowing the Huskies to get into an offensive groove as the Black & Gold got outscored 15-8 in the second quarter to head into halftime down by 14 points (35-21). Wayne State (14-7, 9-4 GLIAC) did most of its damage in the second period from beyond the arc, hitting three 3-pointers as McKenna Furgeson was the lone scorer to reach double-figure scoring in the opening half with 10 points.

The Huskies played Wayne State evenly in the third quarter as the two teams each scored 15 points, with Isabella Lenz scoring nine of her team-high 13 points in the quarter. MTU still trailed by 14, entering the final quarter of action (50-36).

Michigan Tech went 0-for-5 from 3-point land in the final quarter, shooting 25 percent in the last 10 minutes, being outscored by Wayne State 16-8 to decide the game at 66-44.

Janie Tormanen scored the first six points for the Black & Gold and finished with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Ferguson (19 points) and Shea Tripp (18 points) led the way for the Warriors as Taylor Thompson grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to go with six points.

The Huskies continue the road weekend on Saturday, traveling to Saginaw Valley State slated for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff.
