LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – Legislation passed in Michigan’s House of Representatives that aims to protect bystanders who step up to help in emergency medical situations. The vote passed with broad bipartisan support, 105-4 with one member absent.
The update to the state’s Good Samaritan Act was introduced by Representatives Dave Prestin (R- Cedar River) and Carrie Rheingans (D- Ann Arbor).
The bills aim to make sure anyone who attempts to give life-saving care can’t be held liable for any injury or loss of life. It would also introduce educational materials to michigan schools that teach kids how to use a tourniquet, apply pressure properly, and pack a wound if necessary.
“These types of interventions are just critical to first responders.” Prestin said. “When we get up on scene, if it’s a bad bleed and the public has it under control, they have given us so much of a head start on getting them to the hospital.”
The bill is now waiting to be assigned to a Senate Committee where it will need approval, and a vote from the full chamber, all before December 23 to make it to the Governor’s desk.
