Sant greets children at The Westwood Mall

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette Twp. Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony was held Tuesday night at the Westwood Mall.

The evening kicked off with a chorus line of young dancers from Studio Dance and Arts in Marquette. From preschool to pre-teens, these kids strutted their stuff on stage as they warmed up the audience for the Grinch, who tried to hijack the event but was soon apprehended by a sheriff’s deputy. First-time attendee, Lisa Schiefel was impressed.

“Are you having fun? Yes, I am. What did you think of the show out there? It was amazing,” said Schiefel. “It was my first year, and I absolutely loved it. Yeah, the dancers. The dancers were phenomenal. I recorded everything, and it was amazing.”

The annual event was presented by Media Brew Communications. I spoke to on-air host Mark Evans about putting on such a great show year after year.

“Originally, the Township itself had taken care of this event, and that kind of got phased out. We wanted to take it over, but we needed someone who’s going to help us do that, and Goodwill and a lot of other partners really came in and took off and well, you saw the end result here tonight,” said Evans.

Once the tree was lit, the festivities quickly moved indoors where Santa was waiting to greet the excited children and listen to what they wanted for Christmas.

“What are you going to tell Santa? I want Pokemon, please,” said Hayden Zappa.

“So, what do you think about tonight? I come every year, it’s great. It’s fun. The kids, we get together with everybody. Kids love to see Santa and chase the Grinch around and tell them to go away. Yeah, that’s fun,” said Jordan Windahl.
