Delta County organizations distribute free holiday food boxes to veterans

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Several Escanaba organizations came together on Tuesday to provide holiday meals to those who served our country.

The Community Foundation for Delta County, the Seventh-day Adventist Pantry, the County Veterans Service Office, Enbridge, and UPCC collaborated for another year of distributing free food boxes to local veterans.

More than 100 veterans lined up in their vehicles at the U.P. State Fairgrounds. Volunteers loaded their trunks with turkeys, potatoes, vegetables, and everything else needed to make a full Thanksgiving dinner. Each veteran even received enough food to make a second meal.

“We serve the veterans because they did so much for us,” said Seventh-day Adventist Pantry Director Robin Wycoff. “We just feel like we just need to give back to them, and this is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to them. I think they appreciate it.”

The Seventh-day Adventist Pantry is also planning a toy giveaway for military families this Christmas. For more information on the giveaway, call the pantry at (906) 212-2272.

THE MARQUETTE TWP. CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY WAS HELD Tuesday night AT THE WESTWOOD MALL. THE EVENING KICKED OFF WITH A CHORUS LINE OF YOUNG DANCERS FROM STUDIO DANCE AND ARTS IN MARQUETTE. FROM PRESCHOOL TO PRE-TEENS, THESE KIDS STRUTTED THEIR STUFF ON STAGE AS THEY WARMED UP THE AUDIENCE FOR THE GRINCH, WHO TRIED TO HIJACK THE EVENT BUT WAS SOON APPREHENDED BY A SHERIFF'S DEPUTY. FIRST TIME ATTENDEE, LISA SCHIEFEL WAS IMPRESSED. "Are you having fun? Yes, I am. What did you think of the show out there? It was amazing," said Schiefel. "It was my first year, and I absolutely loved it. Yeah, the dancers. The dancers were phenomenal. I recorded everything, and it was amazing."
