ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Delta County Airport is making progress toward a potential replacement of a mural inside its terminal.
The mural was painted by artist James Finlan in 2000. Last month, an Escanaba business owner proposed an update to the Airport Advisory Board.
Kylie Kalishek has more than 200 photos and articles showcasing her family’s extensive history in aviation. Much of her collection is on display now at her shop, Blading Boutique & Small Business Emporium.
On Wednesday, Kalishek met with Finlan and Airport Manager Robert Ranstadler to discuss the proposed update. Ranstadler has been interested in refreshing the look and layout of the airport, which includes the expansion of its holding area.
While the airport can’t move forward with any changes until details on that expansion are solidified, he does not anticipate it will impact the area where the mural is currently on display. Finlan expressed interest in preserving the mural, possibly in pieces that could be put back together or spread around the airport.
According to Finlan, the Hannahville Indian Community made a financial contribution to the original mural, and he plans to seek input from community representatives before anything is done with it. Meanwhile, Kalishek is exploring ways her family’s history can be displayed, whether through physical or digital displays.
No details have been finalized, but the group discussed the possibility of a new mural welcoming incoming passengers to Delta County. The airport hopes to work with other local artists on the project.
Although it is a long process, Kalishek says she is happy with the progress that has been made so far.
“Our goal is to combine my family history with local history and get some local artists involved in the process,” she said. “I think it’s a great way to welcome people into Delta County and an even better way to bring residents in to see some local history and bring the community together. I’m very hopeful that this will brighten up our little, local airport.”
Kalishek, Finlan, and the airport are planning a meeting after the New Year for any artists who would like to be considered to work on the mural update. To express interest, artists can contact Kalishek at kalishekaviation@gmail.com.
