Winning streak stopped at six
HAMMOND, Ind. – The Northern Michigan volleyball team fell in four sets to Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon, ending its six-game winning streak. The ‘Cats finished 2-1 at this weekend’s Midwest Conference Crossover Tournament.
McKenzie Gruner led the way with 14 kills while Jacqueline Smith added 11, while each of them added multiple blocks.
Northern won the opening set 25-19. Trailing 19-18, NMU scored the final seven to take the lead. NMU hit four aces in the set, including the first three points of the match from Julia Bouma.
Tied at 11’s in the second, Rockhurst ended the set on a 14-5 run with three four-point runs to win 25-16. The Hawks continued to push in the third, scoring 21 of the final 26 points to win 25-11 for a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set saw plenty of back-and-forth, but Rockhurst scored four of the final five in extra points to take the set 28-26, and the match, 3-1.
Northern is now 13-5 on the season.
