Healthcare providers share hot weather safety tips

MARQUETTE, Mich, (WZMQ) – The hot weather this week can be a lot of fun, but it can also be dangerous.

Marquette healthcare providers have some tips on how to beat the heat.

Doctors from “Superior Walk-In and Family Health” remind everyone to be aware of heat exhaustion and heat stroke this week.

Anyone experiencing profuse sweating, lethargy, or confusion while being outside should seek shade, and cool down with cold water or ice packs.

Superior Walk-In Owner Dr. Kurt Olson said unchecked heat exhaustion can have long-term consequences.

“The last symptom would be death, and that’s always a tragedy,” said Olson. “It would also be potential to have some type of lifetime disability with a severe case of heatstroke that someone was revived from.”

Olson also recommends people avoid being alone while physically active in high heat and make sure to drink plenty of water.

If you are someone with you is experiencing severe heat exhaustion symptoms, seek urgent medical attention or call 9-1-1.
