Marquette-Alger RESA holds plant sale to support transitional students

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Tuesday Marquette-Alger RESA’s transitional program for adults with social disabilities held a plant sale.

The sale had a variety of plant and vegetable options for people to grow in their own home.

While raising money for the program, the sale also taught students important skills like customer service, and running a cash register, which one student, Noah Stempihar, said was his favorite part.

“My favorite part is interacting with the people, you know, with the customers,” said Stempihar. “Making sure they have fresh fruit they can grow at home.”

According to Nancy Isaacson, one of the transitions teachers, the hope is that the students from the program can go on to work in the community.

“Everyone’s out there with a help wanted sign, guess what, we have some good help,” said Isaacson. “And some of them can be very reliable. You might have to adapt what their job description is a little bit for them, or get them some training or job coaching, but we have students that are very capable of contributing even if its volunteer work.”

The sale will continue on Wednesday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church near the old middle school entrance.
