Blizzard safety tips

by Scott Minshall

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Police are urging people to stay home, if you can, during the blizzard warnings seen around the U.P.

Marquette County Sheriff Greg Zyburt says the best way to stay safe is to just stay off the roads. According to Sheriff Zyburt, additional officers will be on patrol to assist motorists who may find themselves in trouble.

If you experience white out conditions while driving, you should never stop in the middle of a road, continue driving slowly to the nearest parking lot, exit, or safe parking area.

And of course, if you find yourself in an emergency, the first step you should take is calling 911.

“Let the authorities know you are involved in an accident or in need of assistance, there may be a wait because during a storm there are a lot of things going on, but eventually they will get out to you,” remarked Sheriff Greg Zyburt.

The blizzard warning remains in effect for Baraga and Marquette Counties until 8pm Wednesday.
