Veterinarians warn pet owners of year-long tick activity

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Marquette local Veterinarians are noting that tick season can be all year long and not just in the summer months. The commonly found wood tick may not cause harm, however, deer ticks can impact a person or animal’s health and in some cases cause death.

Even with a negative test, anaplasma, lymes disease, and other tick borne diseases can take up to a month to turn positive. Veterinarians noted that you should brush through your pets after each long walk, but consistent and proper medication beforehand is the best way to prevent these dangers.

“Don’t take it for granted when the dogs do get sick those few that do get sick, they can end up with it in their kidneys and unfortunately those dogs don’t live and it’s a drag when it’s a 2 year old dog or a 10 year old dog. Preventable disease is sad when it takes the life of a dog,” commented Bayshore Veterinarian Dr. Tim Hunt.

Veterinarians encourages pet owners said that even taking pictures of tic or bothered area as soon as you see it can help with diagnosing as well.
