NEGAUNEE, Mich, (WZMQ) – The South Shore Fishing Association is holding its 11th annual Teal Lake Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday.
It planned to hold it during the Heikki Lunta festival but had to reschedule due to ice conditions from the warm weather.
Derby Director Jesse Bianchi said they are happy it’s finally cold enough for them to carry on the Negaunee tradition.
“It’s one of those things where it’s like a Negaunee tradition,” said Bianchi. “People fished it before we picked it up and then we picked it up and it’s just been getting bigger and bigger every year, as long as the ice conditions are good and we don’t have negative temperatures, people don’t want to be out when it’s that cold.”
The derby begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday.
The entry fee is ten dollars for adults, and kids ten and under are free. For more information, click here.
