Bay College hosts SkillsUSA Regional Competition

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Friday, high schoolers from across the Upper Peninsula put their career and technical education skills to the test.

Bay College hosted the SkillsUSA Regional Competition, where students demonstrated their knowledge of welding, automotive, precision machining technology, and computer maintenance technology.

Each student’s work was graded by high school and college instructors. They also received feedback from local professionals the industries many of them hope to work in after graduation.

“You get a feeling for going to different shops and going to different machines,” said Henry Ranney, a senior at Manistique High School. “You’re never going to be in the same spot every time you weld, so it’s good to get something different. It’s just good on your resume too. I mean, you competed in a competition, that’s something.”

Students competed to earn up to $2,500 in scholarships. The top students will advance to the SkillsUSA State Competition in Grand Rapids in April.
