Dickinson-Iron Health department warns public of potential algal bloom at Brule Lake

Iron River, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Dickinson-Iron District Health Department is warning the public of a potential algal bloom in Iron County.

The water in Brule Lake is pending confirmation by water testing samples. The public is being warned not to touch the water or shoreline and is asked not to swim in the lake. Recent samples taken at Bond Falls in Ontonagon County could also be hazardous, according to Michigan Harmful Algal Bloom reports.

The department advises not to allow pets to swim in or drink the water, and is discouraging other recreational boating and fishing activities due to the risk. This includes jet skiing and fishing activities. Those who have come in contact with the water are encouraged to call their health provider and should rinse off thoroughly. Pets that may have come in contact should be rinsed as well.

The health department warns the public to be aware and stay away from areas that look suspicious. The department says that when it comes to possible risks of algal blooms, when in doubt, you should keep yourself, children, and pets out of the water. Harmful algal blooms can look like spilled paint, pea soup, floating scums, mats, sheens, clumps, or streaks. Call your doctor or veterinarian if you or your pet/animal get sick after going in the water. For more information on algal blooms, visit:
