IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – In Dickinson County today, the Conservation District joined forces with the Wild Rivers Invasive Species Coalition to host an exciting Animal Track Identification Workshop. The event, held at Lake Antoine Park, witnessed an impressive turnout as families gathered to participate in the hands-on activities, and learn about wildlife tracking.
The workshop allowed children to get their hands a little dirty by creating their own animal prints in the sand. Using silicone molds of native animals, the kids practiced identifying different traits of animals solely based on the prints they made. The session concluded with a short quiz, which the children took home for further practice. Nixon Brown, a sixth grader who attended the workshop, enjoyed sharing his knowledge of animals with younger kids.
He expressed, “Because if they get into danger or something, like to look for a bear track. How their feet, like how their feet are different, and how they eat and their habitats. It was fun, too.”
The Conservation District has announced that they will have new native plant species available in their upcoming Fall Plant Sale, starting on August 1st. Additionally, due to the growing demand, there are plans to add another Animal Track Workshop to the schedule.
