ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – An event in Escanaba this weekend is helping children go back to school with confidence.
Mission for Hope Delta County’s fifth annual Glow Run will take place at Ludington Park on Friday, July 21. Participants can run or walk as much of the 5K as they want, wearing glowing bracelets and necklaces and carrying light-up batons.
The only cost to attend the Glow Run is a new pair of children’s shoes. Mission of Hope is collecting shoes for school-age children to give out at the U.P. State Fairgrounds on August 6–along with backpacks, haircuts, school supplies, and other resources kids heading back to school need.
“I grew up being the kid that needed hope,” said Mission of Hope Director Paul Culbertson. “We didn’t have a whole lot, and there was often times we went back to school with old tennis shoes or hand-me-down shoes or no new tennis shoes at all. It is personal, but it’s also just a beautiful thing to do for the community.”
Culbertson says the shoe sizes usually in the highest demand are 2 – 8. However, some children wear smaller shoes, while others wear adult sizes.
The Glow Run will also feature live music and a photo booth. Registration begins at 8:30 p.m., and the run/walk will begin once it gets dark. For more details about the event, click here.
If you would like to support Mission of Hope but cannot attend the Glow Run, shoes can be dropped off at Wellspring Community Church, located inside the Delta Plaza Mall.
