Lifeguards needed in Marquette

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Marquette Waterfront Safety currently has a shortage of lifeguards for the 2023 season, and they are still looking for applicants.

“Right now, we can only run one beach because we are short staffed,” says Andon Buyarski, the Assistant Head Lifeguard. “It’d be nice if we could get more.”

With the ability to only staff one beach, Marquette Waterfront Safety is looking for 10 or more lifeguards to fill their post’s. Currently the only patrolled beach in Marquette is McCarty’s Cove, leaving Clark Lambros, South beach, and Middle Bay Beach unpatrolled.

“The main reason we need lifeguards is so that we can keep the waterfronts of Marquette safe,” says Buyarski. “So, people don’t go out to picnic rocks, and so that we can have safe beaches overall.”

Signs have been put up at all unpatrolled beaches warning swimmers to swim at their own risk as there will not be a lifeguard on duty, and there are potentially dangerous rip currents.

To become a Marquette Lifeguard, you must be at least 16 years old, CPR certified, and be both Lifeguard and waterfront certified. Lifeguards will also go through a 24-hour training, working on specific saves that may need to be used on a Marquette beach.

For more information, and to apply to be a Marquette Lifeguard go to the Marquette Waterfront Safety website.
