IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – In an exciting turn of events, the Northern Lights YMCA in Dickinson County announced that they will be bringing back their highly anticipated triathlon to Iron Mountain for the first time since the pandemic hit. The event, set to take place on September 3rd, just in time for Labor Day weekend, promises to be a thrilling experience for athletes of all skill levels.

The “U.P. North Woods Triathlon” hosted by the YMCA will feature a traditional Olympic distance for those brave enough to take on the challenge of swimming, biking, and running the full distance, while a shorter sprint distance will also be available for competitors looking for a slightly less intense experience. Anna Briseno, the YMCA’s Aquatics Director, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating that the triathlon route will offer a fun challenge for participants of all ages, including relays, and a youth event.

“The run event is going to be happening around Lake Antoine,” Briseno explained. “It’s going to be nice and flat, and it’s going to be gorgeous. It’s going to be very scenic. The swim is going to be happening right here in Lake Antoine. And the bike is going to take you around the lake and up Trader’s Mine Road.” She added that the bike portion is going to be hilly, which will be a fun challenge.

There will be finishers medals, first place for age group categories and relay teams. Entry fees are $80 for Sprint, $90 for Olympic. Sprint teams are $175, and Olympic team entry is $195. Youth under the age of 17 are able to participate for a $30 entry fee.

The triathlon will kick off bright and early at 7 AM Central Time with a rolling start, and will conclude at Iron Mountain’s picturesque Lake Antoine Park. This long-awaited event is sure to bring a sense of normalcy and excitement back to the community after a challenging transition period. So mark your calendars for September 3rd, gather your gear, and get ready to dive into the thrilling world of triathlons once again.
