MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Schoolcraft Tourism and Commerce (STC) hosted its annual Summer Street Party on Friday, June 16.
The community enjoyed activities, games, and live music provided by Drednot. STC executive director Victoria George says it all kicks off the busy summer tourism season.
“It’s great for the downtown to bring people here to come and shop and eat at our restaurants and stores, also just to enjoy the beauty that we have here in Manistique,” said George. “We have a great town here, and the more we can share it with everyone else the better it is.”
Limestone Federal Credit Union co-hosted and sponsored the Summer Street Party. CEO Jennifer Watson says the event also serves as a yearly boost for the economy, with many stores extending their hours and bars and restaurants offering specials.
“It really showcases our downtown and our local businesses,” Watson said. “We’ve got some really great small business owners, and we’re really excited just for people to come downtown and enjoy it all.”
For Manistique residents, Watson says the Summer Street Party is a chance to relax and socialize.
“Tonight’s kind of a no-pressure, come down and enjoy the music, enjoy the camaraderie that comes with a small community,” she said.
Attendee Terri Robinson is a Manistique native who now lives in California. She says events like the Summer Street Party are part of why she loves the area and keeps coming back.
“I think it’s nice because it gets the community together and it’s something for everybody to do that’s enjoyable,” she said.
Schoolcraft Tourism and Commerce will follow up Friday’s event with others throughout the summer, including Folk Fest, the Salmon Derby, and another Summer Street Party on August 18. Click here for a full list of scheduled events.
