GLADSTONE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Gladstone community gathered at Fernwood Cemetery on Memorial Day morning to honor those who gave their lives while serving their country.
Representatives from American Legion Post 71 hosted the service. The Gladstone High School Marching Band performed several songs, including “Taps.”
State Representative Dave Prestin gave the keynote address.
“What is it that motivates a human being to take action and go into harm’s way?” Prestin asked during his speech. “The answer–values. Loyalty, duty, respect, service, honor, courage. These are the distinct values that prompted so many to fight for our freedoms and safety.”
American Legion Post 71 Commander Barry Holm says he was pleased with the large number of people who came to the cemetery Monday morning to remember the servicemen and women who died for their freedom.
“I’m thankful that we have a lot of people that like to come out here to celebrate our freedom that the veterans gave and to remember what Memorial Day is all about,” said Holm. “It’s not about picnics, it’s not about parties or drinking. It’s to remember the fallen–my comrades, my friends. We’re just so happy to be here one day out of the year to honor these men and women.”
The service concluded at the Gladstone Yacht Club with a presentation by a retired Coast Guard member.
