ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On May 25, the Escanaba City Council took steps to move forward on its budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
The council authorized the necessary spending for its 2023 – 2024 budget, which goes into effect July 1.
Members also approved a tax levy ordinance to meet that amount. The millage rate will remain the same, so residents will not experience a tax increase.
City Manager Jim McNeil says he is looking forward to starting the year with a balanced budget.
“We’re cautiously optimistic that we have a plan to keep it balanced for the next several years, but of course that has certain assumptions that the economy will remain relatively stable and that inflation will begin to moderate back to a normal level,” McNeil said.
Residents can still expect the utility rate increases decided in April, including 1.75% for electricity, 4% for water, and 3% for wastewater.
