The American Association of University Women or AAUW Marquette Branch announces the Annual Scholarship application is now open for the 2023/2024 academic year.

The Federation of Women’s Club established in 1923 is Marquette’s Branch of the national organization American Association of American Association of University Women.
This branch follows the national mission of AAUW to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. And to carry out the club’s mission they provide scholarship funds for students at Northern Michigan University or NMU.

Local branch chairperson Renee Leow excited for this time of year and bettering the women in this community, she told us, “And remember It’s scholarship time, so that being said we are opening our scholarship up until the first of June. The application is on our website, it’s easy to fill out. Get it in by the first of June because it is a very hard and fast deadline.”

Based on financial need, this scholarship is open to undergraduates currently enrolled at NMU, who have experienced significant barriers to their pursuit of higher education according to Leow and she said, “Allowing us to provide for some financial assistance for their education so they can actually continue and then build that capacity for future generations.”

Chosen students will qualify for a minimum of $1500 per semester in support for up to 2 back-to-back semesters. Designed to assist any non-traditional student who self identifies as a woman with financial needs pursuing an undergraduate degree at NMU said Leow and she added, “For women and girls’ nontraditional student such as a veteran, needing financial assistance.” More circumstances may include however are not limited to some of the following: a parent (married, divorced, widowed), caring for an elderly parent, returning to college after working, starting college after a gap from high school graduation, and/or being a first-generation college student.

To qualify applicants must be enrolled in an academic program at Northern Michigan University with a minimum of 12 credits per semester, including baccalaureate degree, associate degree, or certificate programs while maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Funding for this scholarship is partially backed by the branch’s annual book sale which starts tomorrow and that story can be found, here.
