Crew heads to Isle Royale for opening day

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WZMQ) – The time of year has arrived for the Isle Royal crew to return to the Island to prepare the park for the upcoming tourist season.

When the snow begins to melt around this time of year, it signifies opening day for Isle Royal and its crew and has been since the early 1940s when Isle Royal first became a national park.

No stranger to this tradition, Isle Royale Public Information Officer, Liz Valencia said, “So every spring, at some point, usually end of April, everybody gets out their gear, loaded up, get some groceries, and, and get on the Ranger three, or boat, like the LCM, and, and head to the island.”

And until more recently, with upgraded technology installing cameras, the crew had no idea what they would encounter when they get out there. Experiencing this throughout the years, Valencia told us, “Maybe there’s snow to shovel. Sometimes it’s nice, there’s no ice. They can just get right to the dock and start right in.”

With only a month before the first tourist passengers arrive on the Ranger 3, this crew has their work cut out for them.

Providing a visual of what Isle Royale entails, Valencia shared, “We have like three little cities out there, so they have to get the power running, you know, I try to do that. First, we have diesel generators, and then they have to set up the water plant so they can pump water, fresh water, and they have to treat that. So that takes some time. And then, you know, they have to open all the water lines, I mean, all that stuff.”

According to Valencia, once they have water, the crew can start living there and preparing for their summer guest to arrive in late May and she said, “We get around 24000, 25000. So not a lot, really. But for the short season that we’re opening as remote, remote as it is, it seems like that’s a pretty good number.”

Reaching nearly 2 million guests throughout all these years and reaching an 80-year milestone during the time of Covid, this park plans to HOOT it up and celebrate their existence with a musical celebration on the island in July. And with limited seating available on the Ranger 3, planning early is key.
