NMU’s entrepreneurship class launch new businesses

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Northern Michigan University offers an entrepreneurship class for business students giving them hands on experience transforming a plan into a fully functioning business.

Business students at NMU are finding out what it means to be an entrepreneur in a class that is giving them the full experience of transforming a plan into a fully functioning business.  Under the instruction of Professor Corrine Bodeman, students develop and implement their business plans, learning the ins and outs of what it takes to start up a business.  Like most entrepreneurs’ dream of owning a business, this course allows the students to execute that dream.  Maggie Boburka, quite passionate about what this class has to offer told us, “An entrepreneur is somebody who starts off a business by having an idea and just rolling with it, going and doing whatever they can to start their business.”

With a goal for each team to get their idea to market, Bodeman separated the class into teams, giving students full control of their business’s future.

Full of excitement of how far they have already come, Boburka shared how it all started telling us, “Got into groups and came up with just a business idea of how we can make money and donate money to these nonprofits who need help.

With more than a grade on the line, these men and women have been collaborating and learning what goes into operating a business.  For some of these students, this experience is something they already have plans to use in their future.   Since she was a young girl, Boburka has wanted to own a business and said, “My dream is actually to open a bakery. So, learning how to do this learning how to make a website, learning how to market the business.”

Giving the students the know-how and ability to work the business from the ground up allows them the opportunity to see the fruits of their labor.

And so far the notification of new customers “Seeing orders come in for the business is so exciting for me every time a new order comes in, I like go and tell somebody and go and tell my parents tell my group members.”

And like any business owner, these teams couldn’t be happier to see their ideas successfully come to fruition and only fuel the fire of one day having their very own.
