Failte’ kicks off Bay College’s “Lunchtime LIVE!” series with St. Patrick’s Day concert

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Bay College kicked off its annual concert series with a St. Patrick’s Day event.

Café Bay was filled with music on March 17, as students and community members gathered for Lunchtime LIVE! St. Patty’s Edition.

“We like to celebrate all different types of cultures and bring an awareness for that,” said Bay College campus events technician Scott Breault, “so St. Patrick’s Day is another opportunity for us to be able to do that.”

Attendees enjoyed an Irish-inspired menu, prepared by Wiles Food Services. Dishes included a Reuben and corned beef and cabbage.

“Corned beef is one of those things that you don’t want every day,” said Matt Wiles, owner of Wiles Food Services. “It’s got a rich taste, it’s a little tangy, but it’s great to indulge one time a year for sure.”

Music was provided by local Celtic band Failte’. Founding member Carol Irving has always loved Celtic music and culture. She says the band enjoyed the opportunity to share those traditions for St. Patrick’s Day.

“Because that’s the type of music that we enjoy playing, we feel it’s really important while everbody’s thinking about Irish culture that we get ourselves out there,” Irving said.

Failte’ means “welcome” in Gailic. The group says they love to welcome people from all walks of life to enjoy music together.

“That’s such a legacy as a culture, to believe in your story and your presence in a community as evidenced by young and old gathering together to harmonize,” said Katie Bender, Failte’ violinist.

“It’s uplifting, it’s bouncy, it’s fun!” said bodhrán player Allen Palmgren. “People love to get out and hear the Celtic folk music, tap their toes, and get up and dance.”

Failte’ regularly plays at Hereford & Hops on Thursday evenings. To keep up with Failte’, visit the band’s Facebook page.
