Marquette moves forward with proposal for affordable housing

Marquette, Mich. (WZMQ)- Earlier this week the Marquette city commission voted to let negotiations begin between city manager Karen Kovacs and Habitat for Humanity to build 8 single-family homes on a city-owned lot at 600 w Spring Street.

According to Kovacs, the city received more interest in the lot than anticipated, she says “we decided to open it up for additional proposals on that land with a focus on affordable housing.”

Habitat for Humanity serves residents who make 80 percent less than the median income of an area. Here in Marquette, the median household income is $42,000 dollars, 80 percent less than that being $8,200.

As Marquette continues to see a housing crisis, Habitat for Humanity’s proposed development hopes to alleviate some of the stress the city is seeing.

Kovacs says “right now, we are going into negotiations to acquire that property.”

The City does not have a timeline for the project.
