Trick-or-treating safely this Halloween season

MARQUETTE, Mich (WZMQ) – This Halloween, some folks are considering now, as an opportune time to finally get back outside and enjoy the holiday festivities. The spooky holiday could be a spark for new traditions with the Trunk or Treat becoming more and more popular. The pandemic brought on a lot of fear for the outdoors, and people becoming contagious kept them indoors away from the festivities. “Two years ago they were all just staying in the house, grandma got them stuff and handed it grandma cried cause I couldn’t see em but otherwise it’s great”, said U.P. resident Donna Smith.

During the pandemic, Donna says it was tough not seeing her grandkids, who take after her artistic self, create their intricate costumes. Nearing what seems like the end of the pandemic, the trunk or treat event is going on, as well as regular trick or treating, but, Sheriff Zyburt says people should still keep in mind to be safe on a spooky night.

“Years back we did have problems with people putting stuff inside candy, knock on wood we haven’t had that problem in quite a few years and we hope that it really doesn’t happen again but it’s always important for parents to not allow the children to eat the candy until it’s they get home and inspect the candy”, says Zyburt.

Halloween

Needles, fake candy, and sometimes opened wrappers are good signs that the candy isn’t safe for consumption. It’s sometimes difficult to monitor the kiddos as they hunt for sugar on the 31st, but it’s important to make sure these candies are safe to eat. Is this season for Trunk or treat? Or, are the kids actually going trick-or-treating around the neighborhood?

“If the kids have their way they’ll be both going to the group activities but also the parents will get them out in the neighborhoods”, said Zyburt.

The sheriff suggests a person walk with the trick-or-treaters. As this is an exciting holiday for kids to dress up in all different kinds of costumes and get creative, Donna says she cannot wait for this weekend, and like a lot of people her grandkids are going out to trick or treat.
