A man is dead after the roof rack for a kayak on top of a car came loose and crashed through the windshield of his truck in Schoolcraft County on Sunday, according to Michigan State Police.
It happened on M28 near mile marker 203 around 1 p.m.
A Chevrolet pickup was heading eastbound when a Honda car, which was carrying a kayak on a roof rack, was approaching westbound, troopers said.
The kayak and rack came loose, and the rack hit the oncoming Chevrolet pickup, piercing the windshield and fatally hitting the driver, State Police said.
Troopers identified him as Matthew Morgrette, 31, of Colorado. Morgrette was traveling with his wife, who was not injured in the crash.
The kayak hit a third vehicle which behind the Chevrolet pickup. State Police said it caused minor damage but no injuries.
A 58-year-old man from Wisconsin who was driving the Honda was not injured during this crash, according to troopers.
The case will be reviewed by the Schoolcraft County Prosecutor once the investigation is completed.
Part of M28 was closed while police investigated.
